The honest math

Nobody adds up what the wrong pick really costs at our age. It's rarely the plane ticket. It's the days. Here's my hometown, Savannah, done two ways.

The wrong-month way

Savannah in Juneaverage highs about 90°F
A hotel on River Streetbars that run late, at the foot of a steep bluff
The old stone stairs down to the riversteep and narrow, with rough cobbles at the bottom
City Market on a Saturday afternoonthe busiest it gets
Same tripa hot, loud, uphill week

Beau's way

Savannah in Aprilabout 78°F by day and 55°F at night
A room south of Broughton Streetquiet, shady and flat, among the squares
The DOT, our free downtown shuttleabout every 10 minutes, and wheelchair accessible
The squares before 11 in the morningpeaceful, with benches and live-oak shade
Same tripplus this book,

Your trip will be different. The point isn't: the month and the street make the trip, and the book gives you both for all 36 places. Everything above comes from the book's Savannah page (the weather averages, the shuttle and the crowd clock), researched in 2026. Times and services change, so check them before you go.

Beau Rutledge in his study in Savannah

Beau Rutledge

I grew up in Savannah, watching the freighters come up the river. For thirty-two years I planned trips for travelers of every age: honeymooners, school groups, families and retirees. Coach tours, river cruises, train journeys, ninety-four countries' worth. And like most planners, I planned for the young: the famous sights, the full days, the view from the top of the hill.

Then I got older, and my wife Lorraine started traveling with me. She found every stair I'd never counted, every bench that wasn't there, every bathroom that cost a euro. So I started planning differently, for my older clients and for the two of us. Most planners and tour guides still haven't.

Getting older isn't a reason to stay home. It's a reason to travel smarter: a different place, a different month, a different way of getting there. The young folks have their travel guides. This one is ours.

Questions, Answered Honestly

Is this a printed book you mail me?

No, and I'd rather you knew that before you spend a dime. It's a PDF, and the printable trip planner comes with it: files you open on your phone, your tablet or your computer the moment you pay. Nothing arrives in the mail. You can print any page you like, and the planner and the "words worth saying" card are made to be printed.

Is the type big enough to read?

Yes. It's set big on purpose, and every place is laid out the same way, in short sections, so you always know where to look.

I'm not good with computers.

You don't need to be, my friend. You press one button and the book opens the way a photo does: no account, no password. If it doesn't open, write to me and I'll walk you through it, or give you your money back.

I don't walk far anymore. Is this for me?

That's exactly who it's for. Every place tells you where the stairs and hills are and how to get around them, and the "On foot" stars tell you at a glance. If you use a wheelchair, some places will be harder than the stars suggest, so read "Stairs, hills and the way round" first.

Won't the information go out of date?

The places and facts were researched in 2026. Prices, opening hours and flight routes change all the time, so the book says it plainly: check the official site for anything that matters before you book.

Is it only for Americans?

It's written for travelers flying from the US: flight times are from US airports and prices are in dollars. The advice on the ground works for anyone.

Will it tell me if I'm fit to travel, or which insurance to buy?

No. I stick to places, seasons and comfort. Nothing in the book is medical, insurance or financial advice. If you have a health condition, talk to your own doctor before you travel.

Is Beau a real person?

No. Beau Rutledge is a character, and so is Lorraine. His stories are composites: names, places and details are changed or combined, and none of them describes a real trip or a real person. The places and the facts about them are real: every one was researched by the team behind Where Beau Would Go.

Is this a subscription? Will you charge my card again?

No. You pay once. No subscription, no app, nothing to renew.

I'm buying this for my mother and dad.

Good. Print the planner, pick a month together, and let Lorraine's Verdict settle the arguments. It settles ours.

What if I don't like it?

Write to me within days and you get your money back in full. No questions, and you keep the book.

Questions before you buy?

Write to me here and I'll answer.
